3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a functional text passage to read. Questions are asked about details, conclusions, inferences, sequencing, and events in the text.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4, Sessions 2.4 and 2.5 pages 29 and 30.
5. Environmental Stewardship	Make sure to read your “Stewardship of the Family” project, which is due on February 27th, 2012.

Reading: Test Prep—Students will read multiple reading passages and listen to listening passages and then answer a series of multiple choice and short response questions.

Writing: Test Prep—Students will read two reading passages and then write an extended response to a question.

Math: Multiplication and Division—Students will learn about equal groups.

Soc. Studies and Science: Kenya and Simple Machines—Students will learned about the influence and development of simple machines in Kenya.

Parent Remainders:

• Holiday packages were handed out today. Please make sure your child completes them and hand them in on Monday, February 27^th, 2012.
• Encourage your child to read for at least 40 minutes everyday. The ELA is just couple weeks from now and they would have to read at least 7 different passages in just 60 minutes.

2. Writing	If you could only save one character from the book in the event of a disaster, which one would it be and why?
3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a narrative to read.  Questions may include identifying story details, sequencing, selecting a title, character emotions, mood, story setting, theme, motive, drawing conclusions, and predicting outcomes.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4, Session 2.2 pages 22 and 23.

1. Reading	Read for at least 40 minutes every night.
2. Writing	Identify the problem in the book and give an alternate solution, one not given by the author.
3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a long, fictional passage to read.  Questions will deal with understanding, analyzing, and evaluating information within the passage.  Some questions will ask the student to sequence events, analyze character emotions, and extend meaning beyond the passage.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4, Session 2.1 page 21.

2. Writing	Write a different ending to the book. Explain why you changed it.
3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a passage to read.  Questions will deal with extending and constructing meaning, and making generalizations from information within the passage.  Some questions will ask the student to select a title, identify character motives, and predict outcomes.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4—Session 1.4 page 17.

1. Reading	Read for at least 40 minutes every night.
2. Writing	After reading for 40 minutes, write a letter to a friend or family member recommending this book. Be sure to explain the reason(s) why you’re recommending this book.
3. Reading Comprehension	There are two types of questions in this skill.  In the first, the student is given a statement and must determine whether it is a fact, opinion, or both.  The second type of question presents the student with a short passage to read.  One portion of the passage is underlined.  The student must determine whether evidence is given to support the underlined opinion.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4—Session 1.4 page 14.

2. Writing	Tell about a time something similar to what in the story happened to you or to someone you know (Text-to-Self or Text-to-World).
3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a descriptive narrative to read.  The conclusion is omitted and students must use the information provided to predict an outcome.
4. Math	Students complete a handout in which they are ask to measure and find the perimeter of a given polygon.

2. Writing	1. If you were in a problem situation like one in the book, how would you have acted? Be sure to tell what the situation is. 2. What lesson did you learn from the story?
3. Reading Comprehension	The student is presented with a story containing dialogue between characters.  Questions will deal with paraphrasing, organization, and generalizations within the passage.  Some questions will ask the student to identify the mood, theme, and organizational patterns.
4. Math	Students complete student activity book Unit 4, Session 1.2 page 8.
